Ever since an August story ran in the Star , Marissa McTasney has been run off her feet

Some people think big. Others, like the popular "pink boot lady," just think bigger.
And manage to get there faster.
Featured last summer in the Star's Thinking Big series on small business, Marissa McTasney, the founder of women's work-wear line Tomboy Trades Ltd., has found hers growing by leaps and bounds since her story hit these pages.
Of course when you have the gumption and a great idea that involves fashion friendly gear for the female "fix-it" set in pale pink and baby blue, you already have a foot in the door, so to speak.
Who says you can’t look good to work hard? Not Marissa McTasney. The Brooklin entrepreneur has successfully launched a line of women’s construction gear in female-friendly pinks, blues, reds and greens.
When Marissa McTasney decided to enter the skilled trades, the first thing she needed was a pair of steel-toed work boots. Dissatisfied with the assortment of mundane tans and blacks, she tracked down a sales manager to enquire, “Where are the pink boots?”
“I get asked that all the time,” was the sales manager’s reply.
So why, thought McTasney, isn’t someone selling them? The savvy entrepreneur quickly capitalized on what she perceived as a hole in the marketplace by introducing a line of women’s construction gear.
She persevered with her pursuit of pink. She discovered a company in China that would deliver what she wanted. They sent her a picture, and she ordered 30 pairs.
She added baby blue, red and hunter green to the colour spectrum and broadened the line to include colour-coordinated hardhats, tool belts, safety glasses and formfitting, cap-sleeved T-shirts designed for a woman’s figure. She branded her line Tomboy Trades, and stamped them with a slick ‘girl-power’ logo of tool-toting women.
Marissa recently contributed to the Heart Business Journal For Women, and we'd like to give you a head's up for their future issue! Only problem we see so far, is that the shoe isn't our Tomboy Trades Pink boots! Check out the website!
We love attention and this is the best kind! Check out this great tool for business ideas and read up on TomboyTrades!

Big-box stores can be a girl's best friend — if you know where to look. We scoured the shelves, using our unique and exclusive Sweetspot find-the-best-stuff methodology, to bring you this sweet pick.
We’ve watched just enough home renovation reality TV to believe that we can update any room in our house without much help. But ever since taking on our Do-It-Yourself mentality, we’ve been noticing a serious imbalance: We may have the girl power, but there isn’t much in the way of girly power tools…
Which is why we were so appreciative when we came across Tomboy Trades. Instead of the standard ho-hum hues (tan, tan and more tan) typically used for construction gear, this line of tool belts and work boots are available in female-friendly colours including pink, blue, green and red.
For serious reconstruction, we can also pick up a matching hardhat and safety goggles, and they even have cute cap-sleeve tees to show of our super buff arms (hammering really builds up the pipes).
And when we need to call in for reinforcements (we do not mix well with electricity), we use Tomboy’s handy online directory of professional female tradeswomen, complete with carpenters, painters and electricians — all in Ontario. And none of them will make fun of our outfit.
